“These things Jesus spoke; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy Son, that the Son may glorify Thee, even as Thou gavest Him authority over all mankind, that to all whom Thou hast given Him, He may give eternal life. "And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent. "I glorified Thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which Thou hast given Me to do. "And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. John 17:1-5
Wherever in our Lord’s earthly life any incident indicates more emphatically than usual the lowliness of His humiliation, there, side by side of it, you get something that indicates the majesty of His glory. For instance –
• He is born a weak infant, but angels herald His birth.
• He lies in a manger, but a star hangs trembling above it, and leads sages from afar with gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
• He sits weary on the stone wall of a well, and asks for water from a peasant woman, but He gives her the water of life.
• He lies down to sleep from pure exhaustion in the stern of the little fishing boat, but He wakes to command the storm, and it is still.
• He weeps beside the grave of Lazarus, but He flings His voice into its inmost recesses, and the sheeted dead come forth.
He came to glorify the Father and He did!!! And the Father in turn glorified the Son.
Our response, likewise, is to live in such a way that we bring glory and honor to our Lord. Sometimes the way to glorify God is to be humble. Humility is not weakness it is simply realizing that it’s not about us, but Him! Let Him live through you today and watch what God will do.
