Under the Microscope

“And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.” John 3:19-20

C.H. Spurgeon tells of a missionary in India who encountered a primitive Hindu whose religion consisted of not eating food that required the destruction of life. The missionary took his microscope and made a slide with a drop of water from the shaman’s cup. The man looked and saw clearly the dozens of microscopic creatures swimming in his water.

But instead of abandoning his false religion, he grew very angry at the microscope. He took a club and beat it to smithereens, then he threatened the missionary.

It’s amazing how often people being exposed as sinners seek to take their anger out on the messenger, when their quarrel is really with God.

People always get angry with the messenger and not the message. But the truth is, they don’t like the messenger because of the message. The message we proclaim is a message that divides. To those who are perishing, it is foolishness. To those who are saved, it is the power of God.

May we be found faithful to always tell the truth, no matter what the response.
