The Obligations of a Steward, Part III

“...he will put him in charge of all his possessions.” Luke 12:44

We are stewards of material things. Understand, the purpose of making a steward responsible for ‘things’ was to make sure the needs of the household were met according to the intent and purpose of the owner.
Who are we? We are stewards!
Who is the owner? He is, the Lord Jesus Christ!
What do we own? Nothing!
What does He own? Everything!
Who are we accountable to? The Lord!

God gives to us to meet our needs, and to reach this world with the gospel through His church. Giving according to the intent and purpose of God, is at the heart of the steward’s responsibility. God is the great, gracious, generous giver. God’s stewards are to follow the example of the Lord, and give generously and we are accountable to God for the way we use His things.

The steward in this parable is accountable to his master for the way he used the master’s resources. If the master comes and finds him faithful, he will be entrusted with more. If he is unfaithful, he will be severely punished.

The same principle is found in other parables of our Lord. The Parable of the Talents - Matthew 25:24-30 and the Parable of the Pound - Luke 19:11-30.
